How End Citizens United is Defending the Johnson Amendment.

In 1954 Dwight Eisenhower, a Republican, teamed up with Lyndon B. Johnson, a Democrat, in order to introduce the Johnson Act into law. The Johnson Act has been one of the cornerstones of our separation of church and state in America and despite its original bipartisan support, the law has been put under fire by the more-than-slightly unhinged Trump-administration. With the Trump administration taking aim at one of the most respected and important laws on our books, groups like End Citizens United are beginning to march and conjure up support for the Johnson Amendment. End Citizens United is a political action committee, or PAC, that was established in order to help fight against the disastrous 2010 ruling regarding the conservative propaganda group, Citizens United. Citizens United argued before the Supreme Court that the strings of regulations surrounding lobbyists should be loosened. Inexplicably, the Supreme Court heard their case and approved it which many consider to be one of the largest turning points in the increasingly partisan United States government. While End Citizens United has been uniquely focused on getting rid of this disastrous ruling, by way of a constitutional amendment, PAC President Muller and the rest of her team are fully aware that other jobs are necessary. Of those other jobs, the task of defending the Johnson Amendment from the shocking attack by the right wing has made the list.

The Johnson Amendment has been one of the most integral laws on the books in keeping religion out of politics. Churches and other religious institutions are routinely given tax-free exemptions in order to help lessen the financial burden of their typically under-paid institutions. However, in accepting this tax-free exemption these religious institutions have also agreed, at least in writing, to refrain from political activity as an organization. The Johnson Act has routinely drawn the ire of the religious right but up until 2016, no politician has been willing to go to bat for their illegal desires. President Trump, however, is no typically politician and as a result he has signed an executive order demanding that the IRS stop pursuing cases against churches which break the Johnson Amendment’s ruling. For a supposed President of ‘law and order’ this is particularly distressing.

What makes President Trump’s decision to flout the Johnson Amendment particularly alarming is that it sets precedent that we, as a country, can ignore the rules and laws that we disagree with. The United States of America was founded on the fundamental concept of separating church and state. End Citizens United has taken a particular interest in this case because it also has massive impact on the way that dark money comes into Washington D.C. With the problem of lobbyists already existing, can you imagine how much worse it would get if churches got in on the action? Visit:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/End_Citizens_United
