End Citizens United Ensuring Political Elections are Fair, Transparent, and Just

If the elections in the country are fuelled with an unlimited amount of money without any accountability, one can be sure that the future of the nation is doomed. It is what is happening in the United States, wherein 2010 the Supreme Court gave the judgment in the FEC vs. Citizens United case that unaccountable money can flow into the political election campaign. Such laws governing the elections have made it easier for the wealthy individuals as well as corporate houses to spend an infinite amount of money on the elections. It has the potential to influence the outcome of the elections and make the government that is formed after that to work in their favor.

The End Citizens United is a highly active and popular political action committee that is known to fight against the campaign finance rules that are being followed currently. The End Citizens United’s primary goal is to overturn the Supreme Court verdict in the case of FEC vs. Citizens United. It would help in making the campaign finance rules stricter and ensure more transparency so that people can know where the money is coming from and how much. At present, people cannot keep a tab on who is spending on the elections, and there are no set limits as well. It is natural that when a company spends millions on the election campaign of a political candidate and that candidate wins the election, his/her government would be inclined to favor the mega-donors.

The End Citizens United doesn’t accept huge donations from the corporations and is neither influenced by their money. The PAC is focused on collecting money from the everyday people and creating awareness across the country about the influence big corporations have on the government and the political parties. The use of big money during the elections has become rampant in the last few years, and it has crippled the integrity of the election process per se. The End Citizens United wants to ensure that the election campaigns are fair and transparent and that the money that flows into such campaigns is accountable. It would ensure that the people can trust the election campaign and that the candidates who win the elections have their priorities sorted as per the interest of the everyday people.

End Citizens United is also against the rollback of the Johnson Amendment as that would allow the big corporations and wealthy individuals to pump money into the elections through the churches and the charitable organizations. Such funneling of money through the churches can make it difficult for the people to trust the election process. It also cuts through the integrity of the churches and the charities, which otherwise should work without taking sides in the civilized society.

End Citizens United Adamant to Defend Johnson Amendment

Since the Citizens United Supreme Court ruling of 2010that recognized corporations and unions as individuals, the American political landscape has gone through a lot of changes.More money has found its way into American politics than ever before. Various Super PACs have benefited from this money and are now using it to repeal the 1954Johnson Amendment and allow religious money in politics.

President Trump’s government is determined to change this law though a tax bill. Conservatives are afraid that such a move will give room for secret groups to use churches to finance politics. Churches have strong financial muscles as the 2015 figures show that they received about $119 billion. This is a significant amount considering that America’s most expensive election cost approximately $6.5 billion. A change in the Johnson Amendment will give the wealthy more influence in politics.

Despite the critical role that this law plays in ensuring level playing field for all politicians, few people are aware of it. The American Constitution provides for a separation between the government and religion. A 2017 study by Pew Research Center showed that only 66 of Americans feel “uncomfortable” when politics is involved in faith. However, this can be blamed on lack of information on the importance of separating the two powers.

Role of End Citizens United in Saving Johnson Amendment

End Citizens United is a group that was formedto support candidates promising to overturn the 2010 Supreme Court Ruling that allowed corporations and unions to finance political parties and their candidates. Currently, the group is very determined to save the Johnson Amendment by working with other groups that don’t support achange to thisvital law. A repeal of this bill would allow big spending in campaigns and thereby affect the fairness of the American political system.

Origin of Johnson Amendment

During the American Senate elections of 1954, various religious groups targeted Texas Democratic candidate Lyndon Baines Johnson and labeled him a communist. John was angered by the use of money from tax-exempt not-for-profit organizations in politics. Johnson Act became law in 1954 and prohibits these groups from using their money to support or oppose candidates during elections.
